#BLBestof3: Uri, Total Dhamaal and Gully Boy were the stars of the first quarter of 2019

It was raining moolah at the box office in the first quarter of 2019 and we have stars like Vicky Kaushal, Ranveer Singh and Ajay Devgn to thank for it. The box office has pleasantly surprised everyone in the first quarter of 2019. This year, almost every alternative weekend, Bollywood delivered a box office success and it all began in the name of patriotism. Uri: The Surgical was the first movie to release in 2019 and it shined like no other movies released during January to March. The movie, which is still running at the theatres, is the biggest blockbuster of 2019’s first quarter.

The patriotic movie was followed by the multi-starrer venture Total Dhamaal. The movie, coming from the Dhamaal franchise, pulled the audience and tickled their funny bone well. As a result, the movie stands as the second biggest grosser of 2019’s first quarter. This was followed by Ranveer’s musical presentation Gully Boy. The Valentine’s Day release struck a cord with youngsters. Everywhere we turned, we could hear people chanting Apna Time Aayega. Here’s the list of five top movies of 2019’s first quarter:

Uri: The Surgical Attack:

Based on the events of the surgical strike carried out after the Uri Attacks, the patriotic movie got the nation screaming, “How’s the josh.” As a result, the Vicky Kaushal-starrer earned a massive Rs 245.36 crore at the box office. The movie registered an opening weekend collection of Rs 35 crore. It surpassed the Rs 100 crore mark within two weeks of its release and entered the 200 crore-club within a month of its release. Uri became Vicky Kaushal’s third Rs 100-crore movie (Raazi and Sanju being the other two) and second 200-crore movie (Sanju earned more than Rs 300 crore). Whereas, Uri was Yami Gautham’s second Rs 100-crore movie. Uri has also emerged to become the 10th highest grossing Hindi movie ever.

Total Dhamaal:

Total Dhamaal, which starred Ajay Devgn, Madhuri Dixit, Anil Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Javed Jaffrey, Ritesh Deshmukh and many others, was the second highest grosser of 2019’s first quarter. The movie has registered collections of Rs 153.58 crore. The movie collected Rs 62.40 crore over its opening weekend. With the total box office collection, Total Dhamaal surpassed the lifetime collections of Golmaal to become Ajay’s third highest grosser of all-time.

Gully Boy:

Ranveer Singh turned rapper and the nation approved of him. Proof? The Zoya Akhtar directorial became the third highest grosser of 2019’s first quarter with a box office collection of Rs 139.93 crore. Gully Boy gave the makers several firsts. It was Zoya’s first Rs 100-crore movie. It also became the third consecutive hit for Ranveer, the previous two being Padmaavat and Simmba from 2018.

Kesari:

Akshay Kumar’s patriotic movie Kesari finds itself at the fourth spot in the list. The movie has currently earned Rs 125.01 crore at the box office. However, Kesari recorded the highest opening weekend box office collection of the first quarter. The movie, which released over the Holi weekend, earned a massive collection of Rs 78.07 crore during the four-day run at the box office.

Manikarnika: Queen of Jhansi:

It was quite a patriotic quarter for Bollywood and it seems like the audience weren’t complaining. Manikarnika is the third patriotic film to be featured in the top five highest grossers of 2019’s first quarter. The Kangana Ranaut-starrer earned Rs 115 crore at the worldwide box office and counting. The movie was praised for Kangana’s performance. This was also the debut movie of TV actress Ankita Lokande.

This is a great report card as compared to the performance of 2018’s first quarter. Although there were box office successes in 2018 from the months of January to March, 2019’s report card definitely appears better.
