Hrithik Roshan is a name that is synonyms with ‘good looks, good looks and good looks’. The actor celebrated his 47th birthday on Sunday and on the occasion, announced his next action-thriller titled Fighter. In his career spanning over two decades, Hrithik Roshan has been part of films of different genres but he really comes into his own in action thrillers.
Hrithik Roshan stepped into the action thriller world right from his Bollywood debut, Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai, in January 2000. The film became a superhit and gave a flying start to Hrithik’s career. With his on-screen charm and fine acting skills, the new actor intrigued us all, 21 years ago. That year, Hrithik won the debutant as well as Best Actor Award for the film.
Then there was Krrish which went on to become a franchise. Starting with Koi Mil Gaya (where Hrithik’s acting deserves a special mention), the Krrish franchise gave us our very own superhero. Kids, as well as adults, enjoyed watching Krrish take out the bad guys in theatres. The fourth instalment of the action thriller might also be announced soon.
After Krrish, Hrithik’s Dhoom 2 released. Its prequel, Dhoom, was a huge hit and there was a pressure on the makers to live up to the audience’s expectations. When Dhoom 2 released, fans were not disappointed. Despite repeated characters from the prequel, it was Hrithik’s on-screen swag that lifted the film to greater heights. Be it dancing to the title track of the film showing off his killer dance moves, ruling the screen with his chemistry with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, making us swoon over him in that basketball scene or covering himself in paint to pull off a heist, the actor made a mediocre plot like that of Dhoom 2 work. In fact, not just work, he made it a blockbuster.
Another film that stood out in Hrithik Roshan’s career is Bang Bang. The dashing superstar, in 2014, came banging at theatres and pulled crowds, yet again. A remake of Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise’s Knight and Day, Bang Bang was helmed by Siddharth Anand and got a holiday release on October 2. The film was shot across beautiful locations abroad and gave Hrithik ample time to shine and make us go gaga over him. The title track of the film topped charts and gave Hrithik a chance to display his dancing prowess.
While Bang Bang was all about guns blazing, we saw the actor winning battles with his mind in Kaabil. The film released in 2017 and starred Hrithik Roshan as a blind man who wants to take revenge from the culprits responsible for his girlfriend’s suicide.
In 2019, proving once again that he owns the action-thriller zone, Hrithik made hearts skip a beat in War. The film also starred Tiger Shroff. Despite a much younger actor being cast in a role parallel to him, Hrithik grabbed eyeballs in theatres and made us dance to the beats of Jai Jai Shivshankar. Tiger, who has always admired and idolised Hrithik, also praised the actor for his performance in the film and had said on multiple occasions that it was an honour to have been cast along with him.
War, with its adrenaline-pumping scenes, a flawless Hrithik Roshan, and high-on-energy songs, collected more than Rs 400 crore at the box office. Siddharth Anand, who had previously directed Hrithik in Bang Bang, had also helmed War.
Hrithik has tried out films of different genres in his long career but action thriller seems to be his calling. Before War, he was seen in Vikas Bahl’s Super 30. The film did receive positive feedback but makers had to work hard to make our glamorous hero fit into the role of a Math teacher. Super 30 was a fine film. But did it create the kind of impact that Bang Bang and Dhoom 2 did? Not really. Guzaarish was another well-made film. However, it failed to work at the box office.
Then there was Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara starring Hrithik, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol. With picturesque locations, chartbuster songs, witty dialogues, an overall feel-good factor, and an array of talented actors, a film like ZNMD had to work.
Hrithik tried his hand at period dramas as well with Jodhaa Akbar and Mohenjo Daro. While Jodhaa Akbar worked because of its elaborate sets and powerful performances, Mohenjo Daro was a complete disaster.
Hrithik and Siddharth are set to collaborate for the third time in Fighter. The film stars Deepika Padukone as the lead actress. Siddharth took the OG action thriller star and paired him with one of the most sought after actresses in Bollywood today, Deepika Padukone. Expectations are riding high from the film and it remains to be seen if it succeeds in creating the same magic as Hrithik’s previous action thrillers.
Fighter is slated to release in 2022.
